In Jonathan Lethem's novel The Fortress of Solitude the protagonist finds a ring that, when he's a kid/teen, allows him to fly; when he's older he's able to use it to become invisible. There's some musing in the book about the ring giving you what you need at the time, I think.
ReplyDeleteFunny, I read that book but didn't think of it at all when I heard this quote. Maybe because that character was fearful even when he was able to fly.
ReplyDeleteI've always been interested in the "free dirt"/"fill dirt needed" dichotomy.
